Padmashree Dr. K. M. Cherian (Late) MS, FRACS, DSc, DSc

Padmashree Dr. K. M. Cherian was born and brought up in Kerala and undertook his basic medical education from Manipal, following which, he undertook his surgical training in Australia, New Zealand and USA. Giving up lucrative opportunities to settle overseas, he chose to return to India to serve his country. He is regarded as the “Pioneer of Cardiac Surgery” in India having performed several path breaking surgeries in India for the first time, such as bypass surgery, pediatric surgery, heart and lung transplants, etc. He was instrumental in establishing several institutions in India, such as the Madras Medical Mission, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Frontier Lifeline Hospital, The Study School, St.Gregorious Cardiovascular Centre at Parumala, The KMC Hospital at Kalishery, etc. It was his dream, to start an old age home in India.

Dr. Sanjay Cherian MS, FRCS, MD, PhD, MBA, DSc

Dr. Sanjay Cherian was born in Australia, and returned to India to undertake his schooling. Following in his father’s footsteps, he undertook his basic medical education in Manipal, followed by his surgical training in Australia, UK and Switzerland. Similar to his father, he gave up his job overseas and returned to India in order to work along with his father. He decided to take up the challenge of fulfilling his father’s unfinished dream of starting the old age home.

It was decided to establish this old age home in the very same property where Dr. K M Cherian owned his house. Hence, the name “NAMMUDAE VEEDU” (Our Home) was chosen for this Old age home, built in the memory of Dr Sanjay Cherian’s parents (Dr K M Cherian and Mrs Selien Cherian).
